8月29日 Dad and Shaz visit the Great PlainsYou can use this map to check out the spots that Dad and Shaz are visiting and to figure out the drive times between locations:
Dad and Shaz arrived safely in Fargo about 1pm on Friday. We met Jolene for lunch at a fun little place called the HoDo in Fargo's downtown. Then all four of us took the Jetski out to Detroit Lake (http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=aN.rt06mf70crfw_Detroit%2520Lake%2520%2528popular%2529___) for some evening jetski and wakeboard action (only Jolene and I wakeboarded) and dinner at a little Mexican Pizza place called Zorbas (http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=yp.YN460x8371978) on the lakeshore. A quick stop at Walmart folllowed the 45 minute drive back to Fargo (http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=aN.rt4gtk6xy17k_My%2520apartment___).
We got going at about 8.50am on Saturday morning with all four of us in the little red PT Cruiser (http://www.chrysler.com/pt_cruiser/) and arrived for lunch at Jolene's Grandparent's (Willie and Loretta) ranch in Pierre around 2pm. After a big lunch, a tour of the ranch house, and much talking, Dad, Shaz, Jolene, Me, and Jolene's Mum (Carmen), Step-Dad (Rod) and little brother (Riley) headed to the Cultural Heritage center (a museum) in Pierre arriving at about 5pm. After about an hour there, we checked Dad and Shaz into a big and naughty room at the Comfort Inn (their room had a triangular (2x2x3m) 1 metre deep whirlpool 2 metres from the bed complete with mirrored wall on two sides), and then headed to the Rodeo. At the Rodeo we saw bull riding, team roping (http://rodeo.about.com/od/teamroping/), break-away roping (http://www.hsearsrodeophotos.com/rodeo_gallery.cfm?PhotoID=53328), calf roping (http://www.hsearsrodeophotos.com/rodeo_gallery.cfm?PhotoID=53332), goat tying (http://www.photoreflect.com/scripts/prsm.dll?eventorder?photo=05X8006U060003&start=0&album=0&adjust=-1) and so much more :). After a quick snack back at Jolene's Mum's house (where Jolene and I stayed) it was bedtime for us and back to the whirlpool for Dad and Shaz.
Sunday started with Cowboy Church for Shaz, Rod and Carmen at 8am. After that they picked up Dad and came to get the rest of us from Carmen's house. We rode to breakfast in a mini-van, containing Carmen, Rod, Dad, and I, and Brady's $300 big old car, containing Brady, Riley, Jolene, and Shaz. The car's windows don't work, so Shaz got some natural 15 degree air conditioning on the 20 minute gravel road drive. Breakfast at the Outpost was an inexpensive mix of orange juice, coffee, omlette's, hashbrowns, toast, and pancakes with extra tomato sauce for Brady. Shaz made me laugh by pulling out her trip notebook and proceeding to jot down trip notes while everyone around her talked ;)... in fairness she didn't miss much of the conversation since she seems to be a world class multi-tasker. After breakfast we headed to the State Capitol building (http://www.city-data.com/picfiles/pic1812.php) which Dad loved, and the back to the Rodeo which Sharon loved... even though she didn't manage to find a rhinestone belt she wanted to buy. Jolene and I rode back to Fargo with Jolene's brother and girlfriend and Dad and Shaz headed to a foggy evening lighting ceremony at Mt Rushmore.
Dad and Shaz should now be on their way to Cody, Wyoming after seeing Mt Rushmore (http://local.live.com/?v=2&sp=aN.r9d17s6cbmqc_Mt.%2520Rushmore%252c%2520South%2520Dakota___) in the clear daylight and Bear Country (http://www.bearcountryusa.com/) yesterday and spending the night in Deadwood, SD. They've probably just seen Devil's Tower (http://www.nps.gov/deto/) and they should be just about to go over through the BigHorn mountains where Brokeback Mountain was filmed. Tomorrow they'll be heading on to Yellowstone National Park.
I would have had photos, but Shaz borrowed my camera so I'll have to put them up shortly. |
